Set amid the beautiful and imposing Trossachs, Loch Katrine is a tranquil lake, previously made famous in the poetry of Sir Walter Scott. This is the perfect place for those who want to simply sit and relax, taking in the amazing scenery or enjoying a gentle cruise on the loch, but the area also has plenty to keep the more active and adventurous souls entertained. The loch is roughly 8 miles long and less than a mile wide, running along the entire length of Strath Gartney. It provides for much of the water requirements of Glasgow and the surrounding areas, via two aqueducts and 13 miles of tunnels, feeding up to 50,000,000 gallons a day with no need for pumping. The system was designed by John Frederick Bateman and opened by Queen Victoria in 1859. Sailings on the lake on the steamship Sir Walter Scott, or the modern cruiser, Lady of the Lake, are available between April and October from Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar; they are a great way to see the scenery and knowledgeable crew members will regale you with legends and tales along the way. For a more active tour, why not take a bike ride around the loch; if you don't own your own bike, then rentals are available and Katrine Caf� is ready and waiting with fresh cakes and drinks to nourish you after your journey. Fly fishing and trout fishing from boats are allowed during spring and autumn; boats can be hired from The Pier Tearoom at the west end of the loch.
